Aerial Manlift Dangers
Aerial man lifts are personnel lifts like articulated boom lifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts which use an articulated boom or a series of folding, linked supports. These machines enables workers to get up high into previously inaccessible places. In some ways, these types of equipment have made construction a lot easier and safer, however, the overall safety which comes with the unparalleled mobility of aerial manlifts has implemented a new list of hazards which can accidentally lead to severe injury or even death to unaware drivers.
Falls
Falls from a man lift normally happens when workers cannot secure the harness to the lift or fail to or are unable to wear a safety harness. Falls can occur when somebody on the platform acts inappropriately and participates in an activity such as climbing the guard rails to gain additional height. What's more, mishaps could be caused if the ground-based operator causes the equipment to move in an unexpected motion before the employee being correctly secured.
A lot of workers also fall because the base of their equipment is inadvertently struck by some other heavy object. In this situation, the force of the blow below becomes amplified by the lift's length, thus causing the worker to be abruptly catapulted off of the platform. Obviously this hazardous action has terrible results.
Tip-Overs
Sadly, boom lifts are easily susceptible to tipping over. Tip-overs can take place in any kind of lift, but are more common in articulated boom lifts. Since boom lifts can move both horizontally and vertically, they can change the machinery's overall center of gravity. Hence, if the lift is over loaded or parked on a slope of some sort, totally extending the boom when it is in the wrong position could result in a tip-over situation.
